How To Style Your Space With Books

As we all continue to spend lots of time at home do you find you’re looking around wondering how you can easily change things up? Or maybe you are just looking for ways to feel inspired and creative during this time of quarantine? I know I am because let’s face it, we’re all trying to keep our brains active and positive right now!

I’m going to walk you through how layering books into your space can really help along with sharing some of my favorites and some currently in my cart so that you can replicate these at home. And don’t forget you can totally use your magazine collections when styling, too!

There are many different ways you can style with books. You can place these at different points in your space (coffee table, shelves, consoles, used as side tables to name a few) along with playing with ratio and color in mind. These books are a reflection of you - what inspires you, what interests you ... and it’s fun to pick these up as a visiting guest to see what you’ve collected.

I find going for larger sized books work well since they help to fill in the gaps versus having a full stack of books that are all the same size. Books can be costly and it is surprising how quickly you can fill in spaces with these so the larger size really does help.

I also love to incorporate stacked magazine collections to help bring in color blocks. The World of Interiors or Milieu magazine which are personal favorites. And don’t forget you can always take the sleeves off of your books to make them feel new again, or if you prefer the coloring against that of the cover.

PLAY WITH SCALE

Large sized coffee table books are an easy way to add personality to your table with little fuss. Typically I like to alternate between 2 and 3 books stacked here.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT MAGAZINES

Using magazine collections when styling helps to offer a block of white so that your accessory and furniture pieces can shine. They’re also a great way to achieve that collected look.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO USE COLORFUL BOOKS

As you can see, the key here is that the books pick-up the colors found in this room’s palette helping the shelves to be thoughtful versus chaotic.

REPURPOSE BOOKS AS FURNITURE

Another fun way to utilize your books is stacking these and using as side tables. Just be sure to keep these at relatively similar sizes so that you don’t run into issues with them toppling over!

NEUTRALS VS. COLOR

You can use more neutral toned books if you’d like to keep styling subtle to let your accessories and room decor take the stage, or you can pepper in a handful of books with colors that either speak to your color palette or offer a pop of color to enliven your space as seen in the below examples.

I’ve definitely been finding I turn to my book and magazine collections when I’m feeling uninspired or in need of being transported to somewhere else lately. Typically I gravitate towards books on art, interior design, music, cooking, and travel. In the past my go to for inspiration would be getting out and about whether local shops, flea markets, travel, observing fashion, or browsing book stores. Books have been vital to my creative stimulation and I hope you can use them to find yours as well!
